CHAPTER TWELVE

Halsey and Brigham didn’t say another word to each other as she drove them back to the estate house like a crazy person.

Maybe that’s taking it overboard a little, Brigham thought when he noticed the way he’d been thinking about his best friend and her eccentric habits for pretty much their entire lives. Hal’s not crazy. Meemaw’s not crazy. Still, this whole thing is one giant shitshow, isn’t it?

The ATV came to such a sudden stop behind the estate house that the front of his head almost cracked right into the back of hers. Whether or not Halsey noticed, she didn’t show any sign of it. Instead, she angrily jerked on the keys to cut the engine, then hopped off the vehicle and stormed right up to one of the rear access doors.

“Okay, hold on…” After clumsily tugging several times on the leg of his jeans to get it unstuck from whatever had caught it, Brigham freed himself with a loud rip, then tore after his cousin next. “Hal! Can you wait a minute?”

“I’ve already wasted so much time on bullshit, Brigham,” she practically growled as she jerked open the door. “I’m not interested in wasting any more.”

“Well, can’t you at least… Oh, come on.” With a grunt of frustration, he caught the door before it swung shut again. Then he slipped inside and felt like an idiot looking both ways down the hall like a kid before crossing the street.

Halsey’s steady gait down the hallway stretching to his left was hard to miss, her sneakers clomping down the worn carpeting of the halls mostly used only by the estate house staff and her fists clenched tightly at her sides.

“Just for a second.” Brigham raced after her and easily caught up, though he would’ve preferred not to feel like he was in a speed-walking race while simultaneously trying to have an important heart-to-heart with his cousin. “’Cause I’m not a waste of your time. Right?”

That knocked her from her one-track mind for the briefest moment. She blinked, slowed a bit, then turned to scrutinize her best friend. “No. You’re not.”

“Well…thanks.” He only realized she’d picked up the pace again once she’d gotten six feet in front of him down the hall. “I honestly didn’t expect that answer, but I appreciate it. So can you tell me where we’re going now?”

“We’re late for our debriefing from the Turkey mission.” She didn’t look at him again, and her voice was so flat and toneless it almost sounded robotic.

Brigham knew better, though.

Halsey had stormed into their grandmother’s bungalow earlier today, shouting and pacing and making semi-threats with a weird glowing orb she’d made from someone else’s magic, sure. Yet that had been out of fear.

Fear of what might actually be uncovered now that she’d reached the end of her patience for accepting Greta’s doled-out factoids one little bit at a time. Fear of what it would mean for her and her cousin and any of their future missions after the deadly horror their last one had become.
